To say I have a slight obsession with hosiery would be an understatement. I have a huge collection, and, with the exception of plain black fishnets, it's very rare I'll purchase more than one of any design, so it takes something a bit special to catch my eye after so many years collecting. These definitely looked special.
Gabriella is a Polish company that make some seriously lust-worthy tights, stockings and hold-ups. Carla is one of their sexier offerings, and I have every intention of adding some of her friends to my collection after my lovely experience with her.
The hold-ups come in standard hosiery packaging - cardboard packet with model on front, sizing on back, and a little slot to see the product through. Easy to open and perfectly acceptable as a gift for anyone that likes a nice pair of hold ups (they could just have easily came from a department store as LH).
They're microfibre with Lycra (85% Polyamide, 15% Elastane), which is a great mix. They are super black, super opaque (enough so you could cover up a few days of hair growth easily), super soft and sleek, and, in my experience, the weight of them should be a lot more resistant to laddering than regular nylons. It can be prone to pilling, though, so be careful when washing. You do also have to be wary of laddering the back, as it's much thinner. They have some lovely lurex detailing on the bows which adds a bit of eye catching sparkle to an already gorgeous design.
The hold up tops are very pretty; about 8-9cms of beautifully soft, stretch lace with a very nice, quite unusual criss cross pattern and scalloped edges. The seam (which for some reason seems to have been digitally removed from the packaging picture) is back centered, soft and neat. Despite the packaging claiming three, I found two 1cm thick silicone strips around the top of the lace band to provide hold. Unstretched, the M/L size is about 48cm at the widest point. They do not have sculpted feet, 'though they stretch well, and thankfully, they have sandal toes (just the one seam at the end rather than the ever frustrating triple seamed, reinforced toes). They're faintly ribbed at the toe, which is interesting (I assume that would be the 'invisible reinforcement' the packaging touts). Looks-wise, what you see in the product image is pretty much what you get in real life (minus the airbrushed out seam and lovely model legs).
Me and hold-ups don't often get on (I have very long, slim legs), and these aren't much of an exception. I erred on the side of caution and went for the bigger size, so I'd at least have the option of wearing them with suspenders if they were too loose. I'm pretty glad I did because the small size would have still been too loose as well as being too short! The official sizing given for the XS/S size is 23-25cm Foot Length, 70-74cm 'Crotch Height' and 58-62cm Thigh Size. For the M/L size, it's 26-28cm Foot Length, 78-82cm 'Crotch Height' and 64-68cm Thigh Size. This leaves me with my usual problem of being too tall for L and too slim for XS (also with a foot size smack bang in the middle of the two!). Despite this, they're not as bad as some pairs I've owned: they look good on and they do stay up well enough for a bit of posing and moving around, but I definitely wouldn't go out wearing them without support as they'd be around my ankles in no time. In regards to how they wear with a suspender belt, they're fantastic -- the clips fit perfectly between the two slim silicone bands for a great hold with no damage to your belt or hold-ups.
Worn, you get a similar look to corsetting with none of the faff. Also none of the unflattering flesh bulge you can get with lace up fishnets, which is another plus. Where the opaque and sheer parts meet at the back, there is a slight tasseling effect from the way they have been joined together. It's on the inside of the hold ups so it doesn't stick out or anything, but it is visible through the back panel. I don't think it takes anything away from the look, but if you're even more of a perfectionist than I am, the slightly blurry line might bother you. There are also thin sheer panels along the edge of the bows, where they meet the solid black; I don't know if it's intentional or not, but I quite like how it gives them a slightly 3D appearance. I find the lurex bows to be a little itchy if they're exactly on the bend of the knee, but I do have very sensitive skin, so your mileage may vary. The slight discomfort is completely worth it for how pretty they are, in my opinion.
These are a truly stunning pair of hold-ups that I'd recommend to anyone wanting a little sparkle who usually fits hold-ups, doesn't mind wearing them with a suspender belt, or just wants them for the bedroom. They feel and look gorgeous, whilst still being quite sturdy and practical. These are great for special occasions with a LBD and silver jewellery. The sleek black is sophisticated from the front, giving a lovely, clean lined silhouette; and the back is unexpected and sexy, whilst still being pretty and delicate. I'd as happily wear these to a family gathering at X-mas or birthdays, or a night out with friends, as I would bent over the dining room table receiving a good seeing to.
- The sensual yet sophisticated look and the sumptuous feel.
- Like all hold-ups, they won't stay up on me without added support.
- Bottom line
- Gorgeous hosiery, perfect as a gift to another or yourself.
