    1. DOMINIX Dominates

Reviewed: February 20, 2015 by OUCH! Thank you ;), a Straight Married Female

When it comes to bondage gear, DOMINIX is arguably one of the best quality brands you can buy outside of a specialist store. When it came to spreader bars, we knew what brand we wanted and DOMINIX was it.

We bought two of these DOMINIX Deluxe Adjustable Spreader Bars in Lovehoney’s now ended three for £100 on bondage deal, one each for wrists and ankles. As other reviewers have stated, the packaging is extremely minimal. A clear plastic bag and nothing else. If I’d been gifting these I would have been a bit disappointed, but they were for our own use so I wasn’t too bothered. Though I have to say, some sort of storage box/bag would have been nice for the price.

Quality-wise, these are just about perfect. A lot of bondage gear I’ve seen recently has had unfinished edges on cuff material, cheap looking metal and often Velcro type fastenings, but the DOMINIX 20” Spreader boasts tight stitching, polished, solid hardware and strong buckle fastenings.

The bar is telescopic and locks in place via the use of metal pins. Though there are no rings to attach separate cuffs to the bar as we’d wanted, the addition of a bit of the magic that is bondage tape makes binding wrists to the middle of the bar without damaging it easy. We use the tape to do a weird version of hogtie using one bar which is always fun.

We have both bars extended to max and that’s the way they stay. Not only are the leather cuffs perfectly sized for wrist or ankle use and comfortably padded, but they smell divine too. The cold metal and soft leather, the visual impact of silver on black, and that arousing, real leather scent have three of your senses on alert before you even start to play.

Being lucky enough to have two of these gives us a lot of options for use. The cuffs are fixed to the bar by swivel clips so moving from one position to the next is simple. We’ve used one bar for right ankle/wrist and one for left ankle/wrist restraint, both crossed over for opposite wrist to ankle restraint - the options for use really are only limited by your own imagination and flexibility.

One of my OH’s favourite games is to bind my ankles and watch me try to get up and move around the house (which is made possible by the swivel action of the cuffs but is extremely awkward) and he often gives me tasks to do that he knows I’ll struggle with.

These spreader bars are fantastic for use as position aids during sex too. Holding onto the ankle bar makes keeping my legs in the air for prolonged periods much easier for me, and my OH uses the bar to forcibly change my position, and by pushing or pulling on it he not only has complete control how deep he goes during penetration but he also has complete control of how quickly or slowly I get my pleasure too.

These DOMINIX Spreader bars are fantastic quality, and I’m sure after spending so much on them you’d want to keep them in perfect condition. A wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a rub down with a dry one will keep the metals in good shape while a bit of attention with a leather care kit every few months (or immediately if they end up soiled) will see to it that your cuffs have a long life.

There are plenty of decent quality spreader bars out there at a fraction of the price of these, but if you want one that you won’t have to replace for a long time (or maybe even ever) I’d recommend this one in a heartbeat.

    1. Spread 'em wide

Reviewed: September 14, 2014 by IrishRose, a Straight Single Female

I love this range of bondage gear and I bought this along with some wrist and ankle cuff in the 3 for £100 deal. Now that was a great deal, thank you, Lovehoney.

It was sent out to me in plain brown packing with very discreet labels. Because my order was heavy, it was sent to me by Interlink and not by Royal Mail.

The packing on the spreader bar is really simple, a plain clear plastic bag. The packing really isn’t the greatest and with the price one would think that it would be a bit classier, but hey, if that means more time, money and effort went into creating the spreader bar and not the packing that’s fine by me. If you did want to give it as a gift you could wrap it yourself.

For me leather is the best material for bondage gear. Leather screams luxury to me. Opening the bag I was hit with that sweet smell of genuine leather. I do love that smell and whenever I smell it now I automatically think of my bondage gear. Before I took it out I was already excited by that smell and what is to come.

My first impression was that the leather is well padded and the bar is easy to open and close. I am a switch and for the sake of my review I was the first one to try the spreader bar out.

The leather was a bit stiff to begin with, but after heating up it became suppler. The sensation of not being able to close your legs when you can still move around at first was a bit odd but exciting.

I was just hoping I didn’t have to do to much walking. The cuffs do twist, so you can move your feet easily and get into various positions. The leather was firm against my skin. I knew I would get out of them even if I pulled my feet. If the cuffs had been made of a different material or been less padded leather, I would have had red mark on my skin. The spreader bar was comfortable enough to leave on for long periods of time.

Have been restrained and the one doing the restraining, it is such a thrill to be able to play without thinking too much, allowing the person in command to make the decisions about what happens next, while your sub lies there waiting to except what ever pleaser is dished out.

Spending money on such a high quality product, I would suggest to get a good quality leather cleaner to keep the leather clean and conditioned. The more you use and condition leather, the suppler it becomes, making it easier to use. I store my spreader bar in its bag and in the original box it was sent to me in under my bed so I know is safe and at hand for next use.

I know that this isn’t the cheapest spreader bar, but it is one that you would not have to replace as long as you take care of it. Spreader bars are great for experimenting with. Find out what works best for you and your partner.

I am not in the least bit sorry that I bought this spreader bar. If you are worried about the price tag, Lovehoney have a great returns policy, Don’t like it, send it back. But if your like me, you wouldn’t dream of it.

    1. Form, function and aesthetics

Reviewed: May 6, 2014 by ruffledsheets

For a two cuff spreader bar, it’s hard to find fault with the 20” DOMINIX Deluxe Adjustable Spreader Bar with Heavy Leather Cuffs.

I don’t normally start a review with a summary, but I’m struggling to think of ways to keep you guessing about this particular product. It’s well made, looks great, is comfortable and it functions as you would hope it would. In fact, the only reason why I wouldn’t recommend this product is if you wanted something else, for example a spreader bar with four cuffs, not two.

You can tell straight away that the company who make these have an interest in BDSM and haven’t just read about it in a book. And form is everything, with this type of product.  With some items, looks are very important. I wouldn’t buy a collar or some underwear, if it didn’t look the part. Of course, function is also important with these products too, but I’d rather compromise a little on comfort or function and have something that looks good. Not so with something like this. With this kind of device, form is everything. If it doesn’t work, it’s no good. Like a chastity device, if it doesn’t fulfil it’s function 100%, then it’s no good at all. It’s all very well looking good, but if you need an item to be secure or strong, aesthetics will never compensate.

With that in mind, I’m pleased to say that the DOMINIX is supremely crafted. The main bars are made from steel (with a hard wearing, brushed finish), so are extremely strong. There won’t be any bending or snapping, unless you’re Geoff Capes… I’ve tried. And there’s no escaping from the thick leather cuffs, either. Once you’re in, you’re in. Now, as mentioned earlier, this product is meant to be functional. It’s not style over substance, like some items.  It’s designed to keep you in place. There are no sharp edges or imperfections and it looks great, but form has definitely taken precedence. That said, it does look fantastic. It looks rugged, of course. But that’s the aim. It’s not designed to look like a delicate, pretty item. It’s designed to look like it means business, and it does.

The Dominix is adjustable from 14 to 20 inches, via a small screw that you can undo, before sliding into the right place. There are three holes, each three inches apart which you can slide the screw into before tightening firmly. I’m a big guy, so 14 and 17 inches seem a little small. 20 inches is much better. To be honest, I would probably prefer something wider still, but it’s all about personal preference. As with any toy or product, please be sure it’s the right size for you before ordering. At any rate, DOMINIX do produce a whopping 46 inch spreader bar, should you require one.

At each end of the bar, a sturdy, thick leather cuff is attached. The leather is padded and about 1/3 inches (approximately 10mm) thick. When measuring the size of the cuffs, there was no way to actually use the nearest hole to the buckle, but I managed to use the second smallest size, which was about 4.5” (approximately 120mm) and the largest size was about 10” (approximately 260mm). The largest size left a gap in the padded cuffs though, so if you are likely to need that size, it probably won’t be as comfortable as if you were smaller. There are eight holes in total, but I could only manage to use the biggest seven.

One thing I particularly like about this design, is that the cuffs can move and twist around completely, without having to remove them form the bar. Many spreader bars have fixed cuffs that can’t be moved or, if they can, they need to be taken apart and put back together. Not so with this one. With the DOMINIX, both cuffs happily move around without needing any kind of adjustment. This isn’t really an issue for most of the time and is the sort of detail you may never notice but, if you don’t have versatility such as this and you try to change position during sex, then you’ll notice when you don’t have it. Because of the ease of movement, it’s easy to switch positions without having to take the cuffs off, adjust the bar, then put them back on again, which is a real mood killer.

Now, should you still wish to remove the cuffs, you can do. There are two small bolts that you can undo with a 10mm spanner (or an adjustable wrench). If you undo one of them, you can pull out the bolt and remove the cuffs completely, but I’m not sure you’d ever need to do that unless you need different size cuffs. I don’t think I ever will again.

Aside from the functional design, they are extremely comfortable. They feel amazing around my wrists and ankles. The leather is strong, but very soft and the buckles are large, sturdy and easy to use. When I’m locked in them, I don’t feel like there’s a limit to the amount of time I’d be able to stay in them. Of course, what’s being inflicted upon you whilst you’re tied down may have an ‘impact’ on that…

The only real item I'd draw your attention to with this product is the inability to attach another pair of cuffs. Another couple of rotatable rings attached to the bar that enable the owner to buy (and attach) a couple of extra cuffs in the future would be great. That said, I know many people dislike four cuff spreader bars due to the position they put you in if you're locked in them, so I can't really call this a criticism, merely an observation. Of course, you could drill a couple of holes and attach them yourself with a couple of bolts, but if I’m going to spend a decent amount of cash on a top of the line product, I don’t want to have to make any changes to it myself, certainly not any that require power tools (much as I love them!).

If DOMINIX drilled a couple more holes and provided a couple of D rings to attach to the bars that enabled owners to attach additional cuffs at a later date, this product would be about perfect. However, if you don’t have any need for that, of if you’re happy to purchase another spreader bar down the line for that, then this is ideal. Personally, I’d rather have this product that I know works (and works well) than a four cuff ankle and wrist spreader bar of an inferior quality.
