The best way to start is to think about about how you're going to use your vibe. For example, if you want something for internal stimulation pay close attention to shape and movement of the toy. If you're looking for external clitoral stimulation, consider whether you might prefer a vibe made from squishy or hard material.
If you want stronger stimulation, check out our extra powerful vibrators. However, if noise levels are more important to you than power, look for something that's labelled as extra quiet. When you've got an idea of how you'd like to use your vibrator and what's important for you, we'll show you how to choose a vibrator that's going to tick all your boxes.

Possibly the most important part you'll be checking out in a product description is the power and speed section. It'll tell you how it's controlled, if there are multiple speeds and patterns and the power it uses (if it's battery-powered it'll also state which batteries it uses and whether they're included).
Don't forget to check out the dimensions carefully though as some vibrators can be a lot smaller or bigger than they appear. Our Vibrator Size Guide gives you a life-size picture of some of our most popular vibrators.
Also remember to check the material of the toy you're buying - if it's silicone, be sure not to use a silicone lube with it as the two will react adversely with each other.
Material and Flexibility
The material of your vibe will make a big impact on how it feels. Skin-safe rubber or jelly rubber is squishy and fun - it's used for things like rabbits and finger vibes as the vibrations travel through the ears and any nodules to give a tingly, tickly feeling.
Plastic vibrators are hard to the touch, which makes them great for firm and precise stimulation of the clitoris or G-spot. Sometimes the plastic is given a treatment to make it smooth coated plastic for a velvety, soft feel that is still firm and solid.
Siliconeis a premium vibrator material which feel silky and warms to the touch quickly. One thing to remember when using a silicone vibe is that you can't use silicone lube with it, so you'll have to pick up a water-based lubricant instead.
Batteries, Mains-Powered or Rechargeable?
A battery-powered buddy is the most popular type of vibe as they're cheaper to buy in the first place and at Lovehoney we stock all the batteries you'll need to keep your vibrator going strong. You shouldn't use rechargeable batteries in vibrators as they're slightly larger than standard batteries and sometimes get wedged stuck.
If you still like the idea of rechargeability, you can buy a rechargeable vibrator so you don't have to keep spending out on batteries. Rechargeable toys are generally more expensive but their superior engineering often means they have the added benefit of being much quieter than their battery-powered counterparts.
Plug-in vibrators are usually the most powerful vibes around but you need to be near a power outlet in order to use them - and of course they're never waterproof.
Waterproof Credentials
Waterproof vibrators are great for use in the bathroom and are easy to clean. The majority of our vibrators have some waterproof credentials but it's important to know the difference between what we call 'splashproof' and fully 'submersible' toys.
Splashproof means that your vibrator is not waterproof but can be wiped with a damp cloth to clean it. You must be careful not to let any water get into the electrical components.
Submersible means that the toy can be used completely underwater. Vibrators that are waterproof are designed so that they will be completely watertight when the battery compartment is properly closed. Some rechargeable toys are also completely submersible depending on the technology they use - including all We-Vibe toys, Swan, Jimmyjane, Lelo's Insignia range and most toys by Je Joue.
