Drag is equal parts art, community, glamour, comedy, and pure self-expression. It’s a pretty perfect excuse for a trip. One great show can turn into a whole weekend of late nights, drag brunches, and venue-hopping.
But not every city makes that easy. In some places, drag is everywhere you look. In others, you’ll need to dig for listings, venues, and a crowd that shows up.
To help you pick a destination with a strong drag ecosystem, we looked at the 50 most populous U.S. cities and scored each one across nine indicators tied to visibility, LGBTQ+ nightlife, community infrastructure, entertainment access, and the local policy environment. We weighted each indicator by importance, then gave every city a total score from 0 to 100 (100 = the strongest overall score in our dataset).
Drag doesn’t thrive on talent alone. It needs venues, audiences, and a local environment that lets nightlife and community spaces do their thing. We used nine factors in total. The higher the weight, the more it influenced the final score:
Number of upcoming drag events (Eventbrite listings) (weight: 3.5)
Gay bars per 100k residents (weight: 3.0)
LGBTQ+ population share (metro percent) (weight: 3.0)
State restrictions on drag shows (weight: 3.5, lower restrictions scored higher)
Municipal Equality Index score (city) (weight: 1.0)
LGBTQ+ community member centers per 100k residents (weight: 1.0)
RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants by state (weight: 1.0)
Same sex households as a percent of households (weight: 2.0)
Theater companies and dinner theaters per 100k residents (weight: 2.0)
